Attorney General: Constitution Required Approval of Arizona Independent Party Name Change
A recent court filing by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office confirms that the Arizona Independent Party’s name change was constitutionally required. In the filing, the Attorney General argued that Secretary of State Adrian Fontes had no choice but to approve the name change, citing the First and Fourteenth Amendments and a political party’s right to association and expression. According to the state, denying the request would have violated those constitutional protections.
